I am on a whirlwind tour of Central America; time is short as I have to be in New York soon. But better to get a quick impression of the countries than not getting any impression at all.
I am back in the English-speaking world. Belize, similar to The Guianas in South America has more links to and more shared history with the Caribbean than Central America. The former British Honduras became independent in 1981 only. It is best known for beautiful beaches and diving. I could take the same route as everybody else and head to the beach but I prefer to spend some time in rather scruffy Belize City. I usually like to spend time in capital cities, to get to know how a place ticks you have to know its capital. The next day, I head on to the beautiful island of Caye Caulker and the day after, I take the boat, first to San Pedro and then on to Chetumal in Mexico.
